Temporary Shoring

What Is Temporary Shoring and When Do Homeowners Need It After Structural Damage?

Temporary shoring is the emergency installation of structural supports used to stabilize a home after damage has compromised its structural integrity. These supports are designed to prevent further collapse, protect occupants, and allow safe access for repairs. For homeowners dealing with storm damage, fire damage, water intrusion, vehicle impact, or tree strikes, temporary shoring is often a critical first step before full structural restoration can begin.

When a load-bearing wall, ceiling, floor system, roof structure, or foundation element is weakened, the home may no longer safely carry its weight. Temporary shoring systems—typically made of heavy-duty lumber or steel supports—are installed to redistribute loads and stabilize the damaged area until permanent repairs are completed.

Why Is Temporary Shoring Important for Homeowners?

Structural damage can occur suddenly and without warning. High winds, fallen trees, fire damage, foundation movement, or severe water intrusion can weaken framing members and create dangerous conditions.

Temporary shoring serves several key purposes:

  • Prevents partial or total structural collapse

  • Protects occupants and repair crews

  • Minimizes additional property damage

  • Allows safe inspection of hidden structural areas

  • Supports insurance documentation and repair planning

Without proper stabilization, even minor movement can worsen damage and significantly increase repair costs.

When Is Temporary Shoring Required?

Homeowners may need temporary shoring after events such as:

  • Tree impact damage

  • Severe wind or tornado damage

  • Roof collapse from snow load

  • Fire-damaged framing

  • Vehicle collision with a home

  • Foundation failure

  • Water-damaged support beams

  • Structural failure discovered during renovation

If a structural component is cracked, sagging, leaning, or visibly compromised, professional assessment is essential.

What Areas of a Home May Require Shoring?

Temporary shoring may be installed in areas such as:

  • Load-bearing interior walls

  • Exterior structural walls

  • Roof trusses and rafters

  • Ceiling joists

  • Floor joists and beams

  • Basement support posts

  • Foundation walls

Engineers or experienced contractors evaluate which structural components require reinforcement.

How Is Temporary Shoring Installed?

Temporary shoring systems are designed based on the specific structural load and damage severity. The process typically includes:

  1. Structural assessment by a licensed contractor or engineer

  2. Calculation of load-bearing requirements

  3. Installation of vertical support posts or adjustable steel columns

  4. Placement of horizontal beams to distribute weight

  5. Securing shoring systems to prevent shifting

All shoring installations must comply with safety standards and building codes to ensure proper stabilization.

Is Temporary Shoring a Permanent Fix?

No. Temporary shoring is a short-term safety solution. It is not intended to replace permanent structural repairs. Once the home is stabilized, contractors develop a repair plan that may involve:

  • Replacing damaged framing

  • Reinforcing load-bearing beams

  • Rebuilding walls

  • Roof reconstruction

  • Foundation repairs

After permanent repairs are complete, the temporary supports are safely removed.

Is Temporary Shoring Covered by Insurance?

In many cases, homeowners insurance covers emergency stabilization, including temporary shoring, if the structural damage is caused by a covered event such as:

  • Storm damage

  • Fire

  • Tree impact

  • Sudden structural failure

Prompt documentation and communication with your insurance provider are critical. Professional contractors often provide detailed reports and cost estimates to support claims.

How Long Does Temporary Shoring Stay in Place?

The duration depends on:

  • The extent of damage

  • Insurance approval timelines

  • Engineering requirements

  • Scope of reconstruction

In some cases, shoring remains in place for days. In larger reconstruction projects, it may be required for several weeks until permanent structural repairs are completed.

Can Temporary Shoring Protect Home Value?

Yes. Immediate stabilization prevents worsening structural damage, which could otherwise lead to:

  • Additional collapse

  • Increased repair costs

  • Long-term foundation issues

  • Lower property value

Quick response and proper structural support preserve both safety and investment value.

Should Homeowners Attempt DIY Shoring?

No. Structural stabilization requires professional expertise. Improperly installed supports can fail, causing serious injury or additional damage. Licensed contractors and structural engineers understand load calculations, material strength, and building code requirements.

If you suspect structural compromise, contact a professional immediately.

The Bottom Line for Homeowners

Temporary shoring is the emergency installation of structural supports used to stabilize a home after significant damage. Whether caused by storms, fire, water intrusion, or impact events, compromised structural components must be secured quickly to prevent further collapse and ensure safety.

For homeowners facing structural damage, temporary shoring is a critical first step in the restoration process. Professional assessment, proper installation, and coordinated repair planning protect your home’s integrity, support insurance claims, and provide peace of mind during recovery. Acting quickly ensures your property remains safe while permanent repairs restore strength and stability.

Solar system was installed in 2022, and it worked flawlessly without any problems. But last week, I called Precision Contractors to report 2 issues with my solar system. The 1st issue, the app “Enlighten” was no longer working properly and was not giving me any reports to the phone app. I tried to get the system back online myself but could not get it to connect. So I called the office and within minutes, Carly returned my call. She mentioned, that my message was forwarded to Chris, the project manager, and that he would contact me within couple hours. In less than 1 hour, Chris came over, and after explaining to him the problem, Chris was successful getting my system back online and relaying reports back to the app. Chris was incredibly knowledgable, and very patient to answer all my questions.
The 2nd issue, was that the app was reporting 8 panels, but I had 12 panels installed on the roof. Chris was not able to tell me why it was reporting 8 instead of 12, but told me he would further investigate when he returned to the office. Chris returned message promptly and informed me that all 12 panels are now back online and are displaying correctly in the app. Chris, Thank you for the follow up and quick response. Super great job!

I first met them at their booth from the boat races and I was interested in solar and didn’t know too much about the savings. Scheduled a meeting with Precision and they came out and quoted me a price. I work in the industry of construction so I would know if they were pulling a fast one, however all their pricing to me was fair. I knew at that moment they could be trusted. Precision then did all the heavy lifting and scheduling where I did not need to be included too much. They had a great team and were very accommodating. One thing is just make sure everyone is on the same page with design so thereare no secrets and if you want to change they are more then willing to do it if it is possible.

We recently had Precision paint the exterior of our house, replace the rain gutters, and remove a large stucco planter box. Everyone we encountered during the process was friendly and took pride in their work. In addition to enjoying the final result of the experience, we especially appreciate the availability, follow up, and follow through of our project manager Eric Martineau and the personal attention and communication from the office manager Carly Campbell.

I hired Precision to take on my roof repair, add solar and batteries in Encinitas, CA, based on a coworker recommendation. They were fantastic from the quoting process, answering all my questions, were reasonably well-priced, and offered financing via Wheelhouse Credit Union. The roofing and installation was fast and great communication throughout. I had some follow-up questions and needed some minor support, but they were so friendly and responsive each time. I highly recommend this company.
